Homes near large trees, especially oaks, ficus, avocados, and Indian laurels, may need three or four cleanings per year. South Florida oaks have two leaf drop cycles per year: one in spring (February to March) and a smaller one in fall. Homes under oak canopy should schedule an additional cleaning in March.

• Cockroaches and millipedes

  Decomposing organic matter in gutters, especially oak leaves and debris, attracts both German and American cockroaches. South Florida millipedes feed on wet leaf litter. When the volume of decomposing material in the gutter reaches a critical mass, cockroaches and millipedes migrate from the gutters into the eaves and from there into the attic or walls.
